Jan Gerritson van Cowenhoven was born ca. 1639 in Flatlands, Kings County, Long Island, New York.

Jan Gerritson van Cowenhoven (s. of Gerret Wolfertse), farmer, b. 1639; m. Geradientje dau. of Nicasius De Sille. Mem. of R. D. ch. of Brooklyn in 1677 and '85, and resided at Brooklyn ferry. On the settlement of his father's estate, he was allowed more than his brother on account of his being lame. In 1665 he was licensed to trade to Albany. Signed his name Jan Gerretsen Van Couwenhoven.[2]

Jan was born in 1639, perhaps at Flatlands, L.I., NY. Jan Gerretse Van Couwenhoven was the son of Gerret Wolfersen Van Couwenhoven and Aeltje Cornelis Cool. Jan married Gerardina de Sille, daughter of Nicasius de Sille and Cornelia Meulmans, on May 18, 1670. or May 19, 1670. Jan Gerretse Van Couwenhoven died ca. 1714 or 1724 at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. Jan was licensed to trade in in 1665 Albany, Albany County, New York. He was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church of Brooklyn in 1677 and 1685 at Dutch Reformed Church, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. He resided at Brooklyn Ferry between 1677 and 1685. He was a commissioner of Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, 1690, by act of Court of General Sessions of which he was at that time a grand juryman. [3] [4]

Jan Gerritz van Cowenhoven married Godardina|Gerardina|Gerdientje de Sille sometime before 1678 (on May 18, 1670 or May 19, 1670) at Flatlands, Kings County, New York. Gardardina de Sille died before 1663, the first child of Jan's second wife was born Nov 30, 1664. She was daughter of Nicasius de Sille and Cornelia Meulmans..

  1. Gerret Janse; died about 1712; married (1) Lysbet (unknown); married (2) Aeltje (unknown). Left will dated 6 Apr 1711; proved 3 Nov 1712
  2. Aaltje|Altje Janse van Cowenhoven was bp. on April 28, 1678 at Flatlands, Kings County, New York[5]; sponsors were: Laurens De Sille, Archonia Hildegond. Aaltje married Derick Abramse Brinckerhoff born 16 Mar 1677 Flushing NY; died 26 Apr 1748 Flushing NY. She died 9 Mar 1740.
  3. Nicasius Janse van Cowenhoven born 30 June 1681 at Brooklyn, was bp. on Jul 08, 1681 at Flatlands, Kings County, New York[6] sponsor was: Marritie van Cowenhoven. Nicasius married Elsie (unknown). Left will dated 15 May 1746; proved 14 Oct 1749, he died 16 Sep 1749.
  4. Cornelia Janse married 25 Sep 1691 Gerret A. Middagh.
  5. Neeltje|Nelly Janse married 27 July 1694 Jores Rapalje; d. after Jan 1, 1840.
  6. Willemtje Janse married 8 Feb 1685 Hendrick Emans of NJ.

Land Documents

1 November 1689 Kings Co, NY Conveyances 1679-1736 vol 1-4 Jan Staats and his wife Annetje Pietese, and Pieter Staats sold a lot of land in Brooklyn, which formerly belonged to Mrs Henrica Strockeles and is now in the tenure and occupation of the following name purchaser, to Jan Gerritse Van Couwvenhoven of the ferry for a "valuable amount of money." [7]

Jan Gerritz van Cowenhoven died and was buried ca. 1724

The portion of this bio referring to his marriage needs work. It says he married Gerdientje de Sille in about 1670 or '78, but that she died before his second marriage in 1664? Her last known child, Nicasius was baptized in 1681, so the marriage/remarriage statement is obviously a mistake.
